Washington COVID eviction moratorium could end June 30

Washington COVID eviction moratorium could end June 30

A temporary moratorium on evictions in Washington state, created to assist tenants during the pandemic, is likely to expire at the end of the month.

The purpose of the moratorium was to help residents stay in their homes and promote public health and safety by reducing the spread of COVID-19 across the State.

This has meant that landlords, property owners, and property managers have been prohibited from seeking or enforcing judicial eviction orders, assessing late fees for non payment or late payment of rent.

They are also currently prohibited from treating any unpaid rent or other related charges as an enforceable debt or obligation that is owing or collectable, as long as non-payment was as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak and occurred on or after February 29, 2020.

Unless Gov. Inslee issues an extension to this order, the Eviction Moratorium will end June 30th, and will remove these protections.
