The lifeblood of popular music, Soul originated in the Black community throughout the United States in the 1950s and early 1960s. It combines elements of Black gospel music, rhythm and blues and jazz. Like all popular music, Soul mirrored the times, adopting current sounds and styles, whether the elasticity of psychedelia or the gritty rhythms of hip-hop.
