MAKE IT RAIN
The Liberty Presents
April 18th, 7pm
The Gemini boys really blew Portland away last year with their incredible performance. This year, they return as “Gemini 3,” promising to make it rain with a torrent of evocative music for percussion, featuring works by Alejandro Vinao, Andy Akiho, Toru Takemitsu, and Thierry de Mey.
Alejandro Vinao: Relative Riffs
“A rock or jazz riff is supposed to be a short melodic/rhythmic phrase that repeats unchanged, becoming more powerful with each repetition. By contrast, I have treated the riffs in this work as themes that develop and transform in time.”
Andy Akiho: Empty Your Mind
Described as “mold-breaking,” “alert and alive,” “dramatic,” and “vital” by The New York Times, Andy Akiho is an eclectic composer and performer of contemporary classical music.
Toru Takemitsu: Rain Tree
Rain Tree is used as a metaphor of water circulating in the cosmos, and Takemitsu employed Messiaen’s modes of limited transposition in order to construct the pitch collections evocative of cosmic imagery.
Thierry de Mey: Musique de Table
Musique de Table by Thierry De Mey is a unique trio for three percussionists, each playing only on a table-like surface. This piece is both musical and visual and is sure to entertain audiences with its quirkiness and inventiveness.
Jon Greeney, Percussion
Sergio Carreno, Percussion
Michael Roberts, Percussion
